Hecate is a nightmare that started out as a role play character. This is one of her adventures set previous to times when other players would have known her. A nightmare was said to sit on or lay their head on a sleeper, feeding off of the fear generated by a dreamer's bad dreams. Sometimes they were known to kill.

Nightmares come in a variety of forms, from the well fed and darkly glowing black horses, to walking skeletons or skittering horse skulls. They show up in stories in various forms. Hecate is mine.

Considering that I started late I am impressed that I managed to finish all the writings in time.

Not mentioned in the podcast because I did not have the link right in front of me during recording is a dental fundraiser for a friend and fellow member of Astrid Sector Alpha, Kayla Kalka. She is in need of a full mouth replacement (direly so), has no insurance, cannot afford any, has no income, and does not qualify for state aid. She is a hard worker, and this deals her a large blow.

Goodnight Mama Cat: Why I must take a short hiatus

I am going to be taking a couple weeks or so off of the podcast and Youtube channel. We recently put down a rescue cat. Though I've been expecting that one day the time would come due to her background it still hits hard. We'll never know her full story or the specifics of what came before my family was woven in with her.

Goodnight Mama Cat. We love you. You were abandoned and lost, but you did not die alone and I am sorry your story had to end so soon.

I will return soon. Meanwhile I will still be working on audio processing, illustration, writing, testing, and other things. The Patreon will still have new writings put up in the interim. When I return I should have another interview ready.

Flash Fiction Fridays #14: Kagayaku's Decision (sword spirit story)

Kagayaku’s Decision

The fire guard kept watch, but mortal eyes saw none of the minor kami gathered in the room with their soldiers, nor the influence of the major kami, butsu, and bosatsu the forces regularly prayed to. The incense kept time with a steady creep and rising wisp.

She watched him sleep, just as every other sword in the room watched his or her own master sleep. The males as usual outnumbered the women. It did not matter though. Swords were not normally capable of reproducing on their own, nor at all. The humans truly did not reproduce on their own either, just as they did help was required although of a different type.

He was childless and wifeless, unlike most of those sleeping men sprawled orderly around them. Breaths and heartbeats were for the lord of the clan and for their families. His beat only for his master, half hollow instead of the full ones of the others. The murmurs had already started several years ago, after she had been awarded him, as to if there would be anyone to inherit her. More bothersome though was how colder and more distant he became with each passing year. Soon he would not be the young man she had known with such promise.

She sat straighter where she knelt in seiza beside the head of her warrior and her physical body. Her job was to protect him. Thinking of what he could become made her heart hurt. They had faced too many of those together. He could not become one of the hollow ones who only fought for rice and who tasted so bitter on her sharp tongue. Kagayaku steeled herself, her lips pressing together. The other sword spirits of the room turned their eyes to her, sensing the change in the flow of ki.

“After this coming battle I have work that must be done. Who may I ask to instruct me in what men seek of their women?” Her own eyes turned determinedly toward several belonging to those most known to visit the geisha of the floating world, locking with them. Among there kind none bowed to the others, save to he that dwelled in the shrine of the Sun’s Child and still sang of the taste of Orochi’s blood and the vanquishing thereof.

Each reddened, their lips played several emotions.

“Why, Kagayaku? Do you intend to bear him a son to in turn carry you for our lord yourself? That may be easier than hunting him a wife. Do you not know the sort that he himself looks toward?” Jari, sword of the youngest out of the targeted quintet chuckled.

“He looks to none so, I have indeed watched. He does not even look to other men so. If I can find him one, so be it. If I must show myself to him, so be it.” Kagayaku smoothed imaginary wrinkles in her lap, her displeasure giving a cold ring to her song.

“I do not think you can be demure enough, younger sister.” At length Mashite, he that was quickest to smooth words sighed. “The women my master sees all act subservient and haughty at once. And far more flirtatious. It would be a shame to model yourself after such peacock, or to find him such. No, he needs someone that will tend him as loyally as you do, that will not flinch to treat him should his armor fail.”

His armor’s spirit scowled and made a rude gesture beneath where crossed arms hid his fingers. “I only move as swift as he, no swifter.” His eyes slid over Kagayaku and he scowled more.

“She must be willing to put up with long nights of loneliness, and drunkenness.” Other swords began voicing their opinions and advice, not all of it delicate and often far coarser.

A few hours before dawn all had decided to try to find someone and to let the others know, then to somehow arrange introductions. They quieted as the ningen began to stir and go about their preparations. Today there would be either death, or life, for each of them. Perhaps some of their own also would be sent to the shadow lands to walk the wind scoured and mist shrouded beaches, or to the lands over which Lady Izanami now ruled, unable to send the dead back home since her once-husband’s betrayal of her modesty and mysteries.

Her ningen’s fingers caressed her hilt, and she drew a deep breath. Kagayaku’s bearer would not be one of the fallen, if she had her way. Beneath his touch she sang.

Bosatsu = Bodhisattva, a buddha who waits for all to Awaken before leaving The Wheel

Butsu = A buddha that has gone on but turns to give deliverance and guidance to show the Way.

Jari = grit

Kagayaku = luminous

Ki = energy. Known as chi in China

Kami = spirit, deity, god/dess

Mashite = not to mention, let alone

Ningen = human

This was intended to be a short story, but may unfurl into a novella through later flashes to the characters. It is born out of a long ago talk that planted the seed for a samurai that unknowing and reluctantly falls in love with his sword. It also somewhat draws on the reluctant king story seed although the ningen will never rise to king nor emperor.

Well worth the time

This is a wonderful installation in this series. I am intrigued by the good guardian and how he slips in and out of the world giving assistance to those chosen as his family. It is my intention and always has been to do similar for my family to the best of my ability.

Although they have a guardian the family still has to solve their own problems. We discover more about who Morgan Fairchild was and what he did with his wealth to repair damage against the human race caused by war. These formal and informal adoptees find themselves carrying on his work in their own ways.

I found the book full of twists and turns along with excellent foreshadowing. The use of bionics will be of interest to sci fi lovers, the ghost something for the supernatural crowd, and the paramilitary fight to save the world from a mafia boss with major connections something for the thriller, military, and spy crowd.

Flash Fiction Fridays #13: The Story of Flame and The Shrine of the Gatekeeper

This Friday the flash fictions presented are once again set within what is now the Dreaming Twilight universe.

"The Story of Flame" is an older flash fiction that Lacy/Aria wrote before I discovered and became involved in Nisa. Here we learn about the moment Flame passed from a Nisean Guardian and Ascended to one of the Spirits of the Land.

"The Shrine of the Gatekeeper" by Teresa Garcia (myself) tells of the moment that Raikou first entered into Nisa after making the long passage through the mists and moutains (the Dreaming Twilight) that sealed the version of her land the known Raikou hails from.

This is a worthy successor to Daughters of the Dragon. Well written and researched this biography set within a larger story contains a riveting cast. It is a good book to read around the time of reading similar books about the life of Queen Mins contemporary Empress Cixi for an even wider look at the area.

I very greatly appreciate the delving into spirits. It is good to read a book dealing with leaders with the ability that does not make her sound crazy.

Although some parts are fiction it is still a good look into the history and culture of Korea. Additionally the author provides a wonderful list of reading suggestions for those curious to learn more. This is a must read and I could see it being used in high schools to help spark interest in students.

This Friday there will be another installation of Flash Fiction Fridays. On Sunday will be my interview of Rochelle Lazauskas and her two books. I do also intend to do the Sunday Story on the Youtube.

Flash Fiction Fridays #12: Parting, This is Nisa (latest revision), and The Seer

This Friday I present three flash fictions. Two of them are by a guest, one Aria Wolfram or Lacy Musketeer. The third is my own.

Parting by Aria Wolfram: Nisean lore has always hinged around what disaster befell the original inhabitants of the country in the universe I first entered Nisa from, and long been tied into alternate realities and timelines. In this tale we learn one version of how Ar'ia first enters one of several concurrent versions of Nisa wherein anthro versions of Raikou and Horin rule Ibexia (and adopt her in adulthood) and what that entry looked like from the point of view of her father when she enters the singularity. Or perhaps it could be said the spirits of those who would take physical incarnation to later be the duo. There are alternate theories one could spin from this as well.

This is Nisa by Aria Wolfram: I also recommend listening to the original version of the tale as recorded for the MLP world version that she wrote, as recorded by Illya Leonov. She agreed to let me record and share her tale providing that I utilize the version for the currently enacted timeline wherein the denizens tend toward anthro and less toward the MLP based version Nisa was originally held to based on the universe rp was at the time done within (back when it interacted with Roanoak before the Changeling massacre and later the Canterlot bombing when that timeline was communally abandoned and "stored").

Flash Fiction Fridays #11: The Sock Drawer

Have you ever wondered about the life of a sock? Do they really understand our point of view?

The Sock Drawer The warm night always came to an end. Day by day the drawer would be pulled out with a deafening rumble. Every day they would loose at least one pair and sometimes more to the giant. Sometimes a fresh pack would be nestled in among them, the babies too young to be released into their cottony swarm. When and if the giant returned any of those it took they always returned worn and battle scarred, smelling of bleach with tales of horror. Not every pair returned whole. Marriage, though the usual social arrangement in their colony, was not permanent. Nor was it forever. Mates wore out, gaining gaping holes from too tight shoes, unshorn nails, and the teeth of dogs and cats. This did not even scratch the surface of the threat of drowning and dashing to pieces in the washer. Dissolving happened all to often to those they knew, as did washing over the side of the tub into the unknown depths below where the screams of the damned still sounded. Collectively each pair and single shook themselves as the drawer once more slid out. Who would it be today to suffer abuse and possibly die? Everyone prepared to cling to everyone else, never giving up the hope of peace. An especially venerable pair was ripped from the mass to the pained gasps of the horde. Weakly they flopped goodbyes. The new patriarchs, a mated pair of threadbare right socks saluted their predecessors. No one hoped for their return. It would be a final walk somewhere, and either dissolving in the wash or a languishing fate in the Bin. Stifled wails choked in flattened and rolled throats. Rustling came from the half open bag on the left hand side where the thicker ones tried to ask the elders for an explanation. No one dared answer them. The drawer was still open and they must never let the giant hear them. Only bad things could happen, like the day it overheard the underwear jeering about getting fat. An entire drawer, wiped out in a matter of minutes! Why was the drawer open so long? A thin, sad plastic bag nestled down on top of the pile, full of new denizens of this layer of hades. The door finally slid shut and the socks all looked at each other in horror. Surely these new inmates, so thin and delicate, would only see a matter of days when it came to their use. But was that a blessing or a curse?

Flash Fiction Fridays #9: Playfulness (A Selkies' Skins short story reading)

The below flash fiction is set in the Selkies’ Skins universe sometime after Kirsty and David have graduated, married, and started their life together. I have left it intentionally unclear as to exactly how long after graduation. It is long enough for a house in the once again village of Seal Point to be finished near the home Kirsty grew up in.

Playfulness

David rummaged in the impeccably clean pantry looking for his tinned fish. Kirsty was at the office doing whatever her father had called her in for. Her skin was another matter. She had left it to keep him company since she expected a boring day of paperwork and meetings. Said skin was very enthusiastic about staying home, causing mischief, and preventing him from being too sucked into his own pursuits.

Kirstyskin never liked hanging on a peg pretending to be a cloak, at least not since she’d gained enough strength to move around on her own. He may, or may not, have contributed to this. It was so hard not to spoil such a cute skin, especially when it so exuberantly communicated things Kirsty herself tried to be more adult and circumspect about. He still couldn’t understand why anyone in their right mind would hide a skin from the corresponding selkie, wife or not. Marsali’s husband had deprived himself and her of a great deal, in his opinion.

“Ork! Ork!” The skin attempted to whisper. The barking did not translate well into a whisper at all. She hauled up on her tail and clapped her flippers at him excitedly. Her front gaped open to reveal her smooth suede inside. Sparkling blue eyes glinted at him.

“I’m looking dear, I’m looking.” He sighed to himself. “I knew I shouldn’t have said the magic word…”

“Feesh! Feeeesh! Feeeeeeeesh?” The skin flopped down and rolled over and over around the kitchen behind him. How and what she filled herself with whenever she’d do this he had no clue. Kirstyskin did not exactly hold still long enough for him to ever satisfy his curiosity about that.

“Yes dear. I’m looking for our feesh.” David’s lips lifted in a smile that released his chuckle. “I will make sure you are fat and shiny when the rest of you comes home.”

“Feeeeeesh…” The rambunctious skin calmed herself and plopped a head on his foot, nibbling at his ankle through his socks.

“I’m not a fish, silly selkie skin.” His rummaging finally yielded fruit.

“Are. Wolffish.” She rumbled at him.

“Bad pun.” He grinned as he looked down at the very self satisfied smirk on the skin’s face. Kirstyskin blew an impish raspberry at him.

One can of little anchovies was still hidden. Unfortunately now she knew the hiding spot. It was just a matter of time before she’d sneak up there in the middle of the night with a chair. He’d have to consult Imp later for ideas on where he could hide Emergency Fish so he’d be more likely to have spares. David’s musing as he made his way to the corner he preferred to flop with her in was interrupted by a flying streak of white.

Said streak humped along the floor at top speed from the kitchen to the living room barking gleefully around her mouthful.

“I thought we were sharing!”

Laughter floated back to him and thumping started up the steps. His own laughter joined hers as he started running after her.

Flash Fiction Fridays Season 1 Ep 8: Wikatcha

“What’s wrong?” His voice growled but held a tinge of watery burbles. “Where is our baby? I heard birthing cries earlier.”

“They took him Wikatcha. When I birthed our baby they never gave it to me. The medicine mother took the child straight out to mother and father. My parents want to drown our baby, like a kitten!”

Wikatcha sighed and held the trembling woman close. She felt frail, weak, and the scent of blood still clung to her. He wondered if his bride had even been allowed the dignity of cleaning up the birth blood.

“I will not let them. He or she is our kitten. I will take you both away. Keep you both safe. I am sorry. I hoped that you wouldn’t have to make a choice between…”

She sobbed quietly and he bit his inner lip, holding back the way he felt about those who gave this maiden, now mother, life. Resolutely, he nodded.

“Are you strong enough to go to our meeting place on your own?”

Sniffles now, but she nodded. “Yes.”

“Go. I will fetch our child and meet you there. Hide. Let no one see you.” Wikatcha took off one of the strings of beads around his neck and looped it instead around her own. “No one, until I say. It is safer.”

She nodded and turned wobbly, slow, painful steps away. He watched after her a moment, his hands wishing to float after her and steady her, or to sweep her up. There was no time though. His own struck for the village. Muscle, bone, and sinew flowed into a new form and soon the water cat stalked his prey.

It did not matter to him if she was not far enough away to hear the screams that would come. It would hurt, he knew, but it would also bring her a strange form of peace. He poured silently along the path. His nose knew where to go and the village never moved anyway.

It was the inhabitants themselves. He needed only three. With that thought he caused the waters to rise and smiled grimly as it reached the first of the dwellings.

Wikatcha found the ones he sought by one of the streams that fed into the lake, higher up the slopes. A squirming bundle squalled with a cry far more like his own. The humans shifted nervously as they tried to quiet the child and attempted to decide which of them would do the unspeakable deed.

“You are her father, you made the most noise about what happened!”

“Wife, you are her mother. Surely then this proclivity is from YOUR side and is YOUR duty to expunge.”

“Expunge indeed. You blame ME, as if that… that… thing hadn’t tricked her, us all, into thinking him human and a suitable suitor.”

“Then the medicine mother.” Her father’s dark eyes turned on a woman half a generation older than himself. “You did not tell any of us. Did not know at all with all your powers he was one of THEM.”

The medicine mother’s voice was low. “I would have taken care of it in a better way if you had not insisted on this fashion. If you would go I could take care of this without anything spreading to you.”

“I can’t trust that you wouldn’t be fooled. It is a baby, but it is one of THEM.”

“So you think that a baby would trick me into what, exactly?”

Was that hidden anger in her voice he heard, anger he smelled as her eyes bored into the man that would kill his own grandchild? Could she be an ally, or at least someone that would not commit such an act if she had the opportunity not to?

He stalked as silently as he could. They may not hear him but surely they would know he would be looking for revenge. It puzzled him how they could be so loud knowing this.

“I don’t know. Into not killing it maybe, or perhaps just leaving it on a stump and risking that one of THEM would find it.”

He wasn’t going to wait to find out how the argument went. Wikatcha took his chance and pounced. The water cat mauled the male while his mate’s mother fled with high screams.

Once he was satisfied his adversary was lifeless his golden eyes fell on the medicine woman by the water. The baby had stilled and the bundle no longer squirmed. She stood with her back to the water. His mate’s mother was nowhere in the vicinity.

“You never intended to kill the child, did you?”

If she was unnerved by human speech rolling from the mouth of a drippy puma the medicine mother did not let it show. “No, not if I could help it. I was going to hide the baby, say it died to keep her parents from learning, and then later smuggle both mother and child out somehow. It… did not work that way. The birth was too loud.”

He nodded. “She thinks you were in league with her parents.”

“I can understand why. You will keep her safe? It’s not safe for her now.”

“I will. They will live with me. My home is ready to support your kind now.”

“You will have to do more than that long term. Children always want to know where they came from, and wives eventually wish to see old faces. You will have to make them part of your world eventually, properly.” She was so much younger than he, but going by her eyes she was so much older than he.

“I love them as they are.”

“That is good. However we both know that your kind are much the same way and fear what they should not.”

He sighed and regained his human shape, gently taking his child from her. “I will discuss it with her.” He looked at the medicine mother, her white hair and lining skin. “Will there be trouble if I let this one’s grandmother live?”

“I will see to it that there is not.”

Wikatcha nodded tiredly.

“I will still punish the others. They have to be reminded of how to treat their children. There is a flood. It will continue rising until I am satisfied the baby and my mate will be safe and they have paid enough for how they treat those that are different.” The blood in his mouth cloyed and he had no wish for more. Silently he made his way toward where he hoped his mate was safely waiting.

This was intended to be a much shorter flash fiction but turned out to be larger and more detailed than I expected. Wikatcha is an underwater cat the Creeks of North America tell tales of. He is said to live near the town of Coosa. The version that they tell states the survivors of Wikatcha’s flood founded Tulsa.

This was a well done creepy story. Parts of it did not hit me as hard as they should have. That may have to do with reading in bed with the heater going and surrounded by dogs though, so I was not given the solitude to fully appreciate all that had been intended to be scary. There were still several things that broke through though. Vivienne was one of those things that managed to get through the protection of doggie sentries. So did the explanation tale of how Carl came to become one of the ghosts.

Some are going to be confused and off-put by the way the story is arranged. There are times that flashbacks take place where we experience with the characters an important past event that would have made no sense if it were discovered in chronological order. They are clearly delineated though and the author does a good job of moving us back and forth as non jarringly as possible. I will certainly be reading more of this series.

Flash Fiction Fridays Season 1 Ep 7: Water Bride

This story takes inspiration from the Zuni tale of Kolowisi. It turned out much longer than I originally thought. It would take for her to tell her tale. I started intending a poem and the Water Bride wasn't having it for this iteration.

Water Bride

Long ago I went for water from the spring. This was my favorite place to go and I always treasured the time I could spend here. I was free to be myself, without eyes judging me, without the worries about who my parents would finally give me away to. I often tarried and sang by the water, and I always loved letting my fingers linger in the coolness. It was a dry walk then as it is now, and the heady smells of high desert scrub that lay over the land just as strong. That day when I got down and lowered my water pot to fill after I had performed my usual time enjoying the water I heard a low cry. How could a baby have been out all alone? Here?

I placed my pot down half filled on the bank and looked for what I heard. Gurgles bubbled up at me when I found him and chubby arms reached for me. He smiled toothlessly. I examined him as I picked him up. Why would anyone abandon such a strong and healthy seeming boy? Had he perhaps been carried off by a mountain lion and then dropped? Had one of the spirits stolen him for his beauty and then changed their mind?

The boy’s gaze shifted down and he began to cry again. Of course he would be hungry, but I was a young virgin and had no milk. Yet I felt strangely heavy and sleepy. I remember looking around to see if there was something I could perhaps chew up and process for him to tide him over. I could ask one of the mothers to help me feed my new son. I saw nothing suitable though.

“Hush. I have to think son. I don’t know what to feed you and I still need to finish getting the water for my own parents. I have nothing but we’ll figure something.”

The tiredness and heaviness continued to grow. His wailing had stopped when I spoke and when I looked at him he was staring at me intensely. Did he understand? I found a comfortable spot to sit and rocked him for a moment. I was so heavy, so tired, and my chest and entire body felt so strange and warm.

I had to have fallen asleep. When I woke my water pot was beside us instead of where I had left it. The heaviness and strangeness no longer weighed me down and muddied my thinking. I felt different but I could not be sure how. As I looked into the baby’s eyes I was unsure how I would deal with letting another mother nurse him until he was able to eat other foods. Was there perhaps some way to make my own milk come without taking a husband, who would surely disown the baby? I had to protect this small life.

My heart sank when I realized that for now I would need to hide him, and I still had no name for him either.

“Perhaps your name will come to me tonight. I don’t know how I’m going to hide you though. They may take you away.”

He cooed and reached for me, patted at me as if he was the one soothing me. With a sigh I nodded, fashioned a strap to keep him to my chest and against my heart the best I could, then carried my water home to my parents.

I don’t know how I was able to keep him hidden, how no one noticed the baby strapped to me. I was heavy and warm again, not sleepy this time, but definitely not feeling my normal self. I fully intended to tuck him behind some pots and parcels near where I normally sleep but I could not bear to take him off. My arms would not cooperate, so I stopped trying and went about the rest of my day. The only time the baby seemed to make any sort of fuss was when an unwanted suitor attempted to catch me in conversation.

My parents liked him well enough, but I never liked the way he seemed to brag. Being a wife would be difficult for him. I prickled inside. The baby actually hissed. Still, no one saw the little boy I bore baring his teeth except for me.

Finally the day was done and I could retreat into my bedcovers. I held the child close and fell into an exhausted sleep.

When I woke, I was here. The child I rescued, or thought I had rescued, was now a man and adjusting blankets fussily around me. There was the smell of water and earth. He noticed my now open eyes and stroked my cheek.

“I told you everything would work out. Now we can be happy. I’ve watched you so long now when you would come to my spring. Now, rest. You didn’t eat enough last night. I have a stew made if you think you are awake enough, wife.”

“You will meet them when you are a little older.” My husband’s voice slides into the night now that the story is done. “You must be careful though. Even though they know now what happened, there are others of your mother’s people that are not so happy I brought her here. Some day though you will need a partner, and it is from your mother’s people you will find one. Then you will decide on what world you will raise your own family in.”

My husband reaches out to stroke our youngest’s face as he did mine so long ago. Though he wears a human form I feel one of his coils wrapped around me. I snuggle into this coil subtly, warm and happy.

Flash Fiction Fridays Season 1 Ep 6: Obsession

This one is a longer flash fiction centering around Empress Raikou and Emperor Horin long after their political marriage to unite the peoples of their empire and stop civil war. This land has had some long running problems with imbalance and in their world is a seat of the struggle between the forces of Wisdom and Ignorance.

Obsession

Candles cast their glow around the room and dripped into the platters beneath them. Her quill scratched at the silence with a fury that left the palace servants scurrying back out after making sure she still had enough light to work by. What she created with her tools none ever knew and even her mate had ceased asking. Every morning she was found paler, the crystals in the room darker and more cracked.

No one but She ever touched The Book. No one but She must turn the pages until it was finished. Eventually Ibexia turned to spring and still she worked. Now she looked young, driven, and ate more whenever she was at Table. She went out on surveys of the land bringing sheaves of maps and notations with her. The guards that were sent out with her always seemed to lose her.

Still onward time flowed like the waters of the Chie into the sea. She was fuller now, older. The land sang audibly wherever she trod in her searches in restoring Balance. The Empress moved more slowly and kept her wings holding her sides. Wherever the light of Knowledge had begun to dim she would soon follow to address the issue. The Imperial Guards had less scampering to do whenever she left her chambers.

The Emperor watched every year pass and a little more of the kirin become something more ephemeral than either of them had ever expected. He often thought back to the day that they had discovered the crystal key and the beginning of her descent into Obsession. Every year he grew older and more at a loss as to how to help her the way a younger Raikou had saved him.

Fall came and went with her usual disappearance into the Cave of Origin suspiciously plump and emergence once more slender but somehow older. He held her on the rare times she came to his chambers after and hoped that this would be the year she would explain what her binding to the Land had done to her. This year was not that year. It was another year of silent tears and a bit more of the crystals slowly hardening her scales. Another year of furious scribblings that he would hear through the door of her office while he waited on her bed in her chambers hoping that she would come rest.

Restoring that fountain may have solved The Drought, but in bringing the Fountain of Knowledge back perhaps they also should have expected the darker sides of Knowledge. How much time did he have left, and how much was left in him?

Chie is translated as Wisdom. The Chiegawa emerges first from the Cave of Origin below the royal palace and flows through the land, often plunging underground again and through mountain ranges, then flows into the Chie Sea. Ibexia is home to the dragon, ibex, and kirin races.

If you are a Lovecraft Mythos fan you may find this an interesting read. One benefits from some previous knowledge of mysticism, I would recommend reading the Golden Bough first. However, bear in mind this Necronomicon is not to be taken as the actual. It is a modern writer setting the meta book within the world Lovecraft writes of.

There were typos. Some were likely intentional to add to the feel of a book written under duress being translated under duress. Although I was aware of this it bothered me more than it otherwise would have due to the (fictional) statement at the beginning explaining the duress that the book was published under.

Students of the occult will recognize some things. Fans of Supernatural are going to catch others.

It was an ok book. I gave it five stars at first because it was immersive and unwieldy to read as one is braced for an “academic” book to be. As time passes and on further pondering I’m dropping my rating down to four stars because of how long it took me to read. It was, frankly, dry. Although I was interested I also had to make myself read it. My eyes even closed at one point when my body stated that it had had enough pondering. This is rare. It was a fight but it was an entertaining fight.

Some people feel that this has a workable magic system in it? What do you think about this book?

Waves crashed against her rock, froth spraying up to dampen her. The sun was warm here, though the ever present sea breeze did what it could to take the warmth away. Beside her spread out her skin to bake to let the oils seep in to fur and flesh. Her dreams whispered. Eyes watched her from the shore before slipping tentatively into canoes. She smiled as she watched them and sang sweetly. So long as they minded themselves she did not mind calling forth the fish. She liked to watch them toss their nets and spears. Safety traded for food.

This book was the chosen book for one of the book clubs I am part of. However it is one I had wanted to read before it had been chosen. It was a good opportunity for me to set the time to read it. It certainly also made being ill much more tolerable.

I greatly enjoyed how detailed and interwoven the plot was. The characters came alive for me and constantly had me in a state of “what’s next.” I also enjoyed the extremely light touch of the paranormal. It certainly does not fall into the paranormal for me, but when you have a watch that chooses when to tick and a ghost making light entrance due to the power of love that does have to be acknowledged.

I hated Aman. The foreshadowing is very well done. It is a book I will have to keep in mind to introduce to other groups.

I do have to admit that it was growing up watching #readingrainbow that influenced me into writing my own stories and #reading stories I enjoy for others. It is also a seed the eventually grew into my doing the book review videos.

The Resurrectionist by E.B. Hudspeth I came across on Amazon through one of their routine mailings, it may have been their first read program but I no longer remember. I finally got to finish this two part book and was very impressed. The first part is a fictional biography of a doctor who falls from grace after he becomes obsessed with cryptids and trying to prove that they once existed and even interbred with humanity in some cases. The second part of the book is his detailed anthropological bestiary.

I have to applaud the author. The biography is engaging and believable. We get to ride along as the madness takes over Dr Black’s life and experience the havoc it causes in his family. I found it exceptionally poignant that he experiences the loss of his wife twice and the lengths he went to in attempting to save her each time. We are left with the revelation that one of his children is crazed as well and that the bestiary and notes may or may not have fallen into his offspring’s hands despite his terror of what may happen if that were to happen. If they do a second book and follow that young man I would be just as interested to read that as well.

The second part of the book was also well done. I read this on my phone but to really appreciate the level of the bone and muscle studies I will have to open it again on either my kindle, a tablet, or my laptop itself. I debate hooking up to one of the TVs to REALLY get a good close view of the little details. I may do so and confuse the kids as to what I am actually up to. It is not an extensive bestiary but it does cover mermaids, satyrs, harpies, and a few other such creatures. Anyone that is a fan of cryptids, anatomy, or taxidermy will likely find this section fascinating.

I highly recommend this book, especially to those like myself who love cryptids and the possibility of other species mingling unknown with our own. Those that enjoy the Skin Deep Comic may also find this interesting.
