Some contributions were tragedies like the Great Chicago Fire in 1871 and the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire, in 1911. One remarkable woman was Frances Perkins, who witnessed the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire, and who was the first woman to be appointed to a cabinet position in the Whitehouse. FDR chose her for Secretary of Labor, which post she served from 1933-1945. She brought in Social Security, Child Labor Laws and the 40-Hour Work week. Elaine Holtz interviews two members of the Sunrise movement, one a Sunrise Coordinator and teacher Christine Byrue and the second a 16-year-old student Maddy Ruddell. Maddy called in from the Sunrise Youth March from Paradise, CA to San Francisco that had reached Winters, CA, 130 miles done of the 266 mile march. Maddy will arrive with other marchers in Santa Rosa for a rally of supporters at Juillard Park on Thursday June 10th 10-11 am, and then head on to Cotati. Dr. Harriet Fraad is a Mental Health Counselor and Hypnotherapist in private practice in New York City. She has been in practice for 46 years. Theresa Rodriquez, the lead bilingual Verity case worker for victims, discusses human trafficking in the North Bay. Verity works together with the Human Trafficking Taskforce with include the county district attorneys, law enforcement and social services agencies. If the victim is under the age of eighteen years old, multiple agencies respond. Besides offering Safety, Compassion and Support for victims Verity has a 24-hour Crisis Hotline and a mission to educate the community on the reality of the Human Trafficking problem, encouraging parents to talk to their children on the dangers. Immigrants and undocumented residents are the most vulnerable in being exploited by human traffickers. Volunteers are given background checks and 40 hours of training before they are certified in volunteering for taking calls on the 24-hour hotline.

Astrid was born to German parents during Kristallnacht of November 9 to 10, 1938, when pogroms were executed by SA paramilitary and civilians that burned over 200 synagogues and many Jewish stores and houses, resulting in over 30,000 Jewish men to be deported to concentration camps. She was 7 years old when the Russians occupied her town when the war ended, but the post war period was a time of terror for little Astrid. She recounts this war and post war period in Germany, and her immigration to the USA in 1960 to become a naturalized citizen in 1967. She hopes this book will be a warning to the lure of dictators and a testimony to the talents and experiences an immigrant brings to our country. Ken recounts the burial of a car at San Jose State College on February 20, 1970 at the Survival Faire, two months before the first Earth Day. Students donated to purchase a new orange Maverick and then had a funeral procession through downtown San Jose before lowering the car into its grave pit on the campus by the Administration Building and Engineering Building, to draw attention to the toxic and smoggy air caused by automobile exhaust. It was enough of circus atmosphere to attract the New York Times to publish a report the next day titled Survival Theme of Faire on Coast. Vesta talks of events leading to the First Earth Day like Mao's policy of killing the sparrows and Rachel Carsons' book Silent Spring.
