00-02 The S.H.I.E.L.D. Identity

  • Created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby
  • Introduced in Strange Tales #135 (August 1965)
  • Original Acronym - Supreme Headquarters, International Espionage, Law-Enforcement Division
  • Acronym change in 1991 to - Strategic Hazard Intervention Espionage Logistics Directorate
  • Marvel Cinematic / The Avengers Acronym - Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement and Logistics Division
  • Created by Nick Fury after World War II but discarded as it may not have been approved
  • United Nations based international group ended up creating the agency and named Fury the head
  • Fury reports to a 12 member council where he doesn’t know their identity - falls to the jurisdiction of the United Nations
  • Key innovation - Life Model Decoy (LMD) to create android version of humans - caused the dissolving and re-creation of S.H.I.E.L.D. after the tech was stolen and used against the organization
  • Superhuman Civil War created tensions with governments and superhumans
  • Fury replaced by Maria Hill after his earlier failures to which Hill is unable to run the organization - appoints Tony Stark as director who is able to raise moral and make internal adjustments to improve the organization
  • S.H.I.E.L.D. is eventually disbanded due to the numerous infiltrations and H.A.M.M.E.R. is created and headed by Norman Osborn
  • Fury eventually reforms S.H.I.E.L.D. after the H.A.M.M.E.R. issues with the Dark Avengers
  • Technician, Administrator, Field Agent, Regional Officer, Special Officer, Regional Director, Special Director, Executive Director
  • Most employees are normal humans
  • Teamed with select super humans (i.e. Marvel Man, Texas Twister, Blue Streak, Vamp)
  • Psi-Division works with telepathic agents
  • Superhumans are hired on an individual basis as needed
Nemesis - HYDRA
  • Named after the Lernaean Hydra - if the head is cut off, many more will rise to take its place
  • Funded by Baron Strucker’s fortune
  • Baron Strucker is the Supreme Hydra
  • Followed by ruling committee, division chiefs, then members and agents
  • Technology used based on Gnobians discovered in 1944
  • Organization built off of the Japanese ninja clan The Hand and moved to the Pacific Island
  • The initial death of Strucker created worldwide offshoots of Hydra and was unable to reform properly due to efforts to revive and clone him as well as infiltrate S.H.I.E.L.D.
  • Nick Fury eventually finds out HYDRA controlled S.H.I.E.L.D. as well as various high level government officials
  • Strucker eventually rebuilds HYDRA from the ground up with Viper, Madame Hydra, Kraken and The Hive (also resurrects The Gorgon to help in showing HYDRA’s true face to the world)
