Are you a dog lover? If so, I’m about to give you another reason to love them even more. This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. Dogs have an incredible sense of smell and people often believe that they can “sniff out” disease. Unlike humans who have 5 million olfactory receptors, beagles have 225 million. Researchers from Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine used this to their advantage and trained three beagles to “sniff out” non-small cell lung cancer in blood samples. The beagles were able to successfully identify the presence of cancer with over 95% specificity. Next, the researchers plan to train the dogs how to sniff out other forms of cancer-- not just from blood samples, but also from breath samples. Maybe dogs really are “man’s best friend”.
